Week 3 Dick and Carey, Kemp, and ARCS

The Question(s)

Write a reflection about the advanced instructional designs that were presented in class. Which ones made sense? Which would you use? Why? Which did you have problems with and what problems?

Dick and Carey

This is the model that I chose. I love the way it acknowledges a full circle process and the editing that happens as improvements and changes are made. The model has nine steps that begin with assessing the needs of the learner, conducting instructional analysis, identifying learner’s areas of needs, creating performance objectives, developing the assessments, creating instructional strategies, selecting instruction, creating a formative evaluation and then revising instruction to make a better lesson the next time. I feel that this is the reality of lesson plans.

Kemp

 The Kemp model is very much like the Dick and Carey model. The primary difference is that the Kemp model stresses the ability to start anywhere in the steps. It also reiterates that the process is one of constant revisions. You make changes as you go and as you need to. The steps in the Kemp plan are (from eduwiki) :

  1. Identify instructional problems, and specify goals for designing an instructional program.
  2. Examine learner characteristics that should receive attention during planning.
  3. Identify subject content, and analyze task components related to stated goals and purposes.
  4. State instructional objectives for the learner.
  5. Sequence content within each instructional unit for logical learning.
  6. Design instructional strategies so that each learner can master the objectives.
  7. Plan the instructional message and delivery.
  8. Develop evaluation instruments to assess objectives.
  9. Select resources to support instruction and learning activities.

ARCS

The ARCS model stands for Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction. This model seemed to incorporate more of an emotional aspect than the other models that have been presented. I appreciated the attention paid to getting the learners connected before starting the lessons and the encouragement and engagement features of the model. Overall though, it is not my favorite model.

Learning about all of the models was a great activity. There are so many that I feel I had only brief understandings before and now I have a thorough understanding of at least nine!
